The Chembur police have arrested a tanker driver who allegedly ran his heavy vehicle over a 40-year-old pedestrian.

The accident was reported on Friday noon when the deceased, identified as Naresh Kakrecha, who was accompanied by his wife and his son were walking down the street and the accused, identified as Umesh Yadav (24), carelessly ran over Kakrecha who died on the spot.

According to the police, Yadav was driving his vehicle (MH 04 GR 1275) when he lost control over his vehicle and collided with the edge of footpath dragging Kakrecha beneath the wheels.

"The mishap took place near Ambedkar statue in Chembur and in broad daylight. The accused couldn't handle the mechanical controls of the heavy vehicles following which the accident happened. Yadav who later realized that he drove his vehicle over Kakrecha did not bother to call for medical help and fled from the spot. Kakrecha's wife called for medical help immediately. She later she lodged a complaint against him," informed a police officer.

"Yadav has been arrested under 279 (rash driving), section 304(a) (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code. Necessary investigation is under progress and we have also seized the vehicle of the accused" the officer added.
