When parents of a 4-year-old boy brought him to Seven Hills Hospital with blood pressure and cholesterol problem, doctors never thought that they are seeing a child with an adult disease.

What is Ascending Aortic Aneurysm?
According to doctors in the cardiac science department, the child had Ascending Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) which is seen in only in adults, especially those who smoke.
"Dheeman Dey had come to us late last year. He had high blood pressure and cholesterol levels that's generally seen in elderly people. On evaluation, we found that he had AAA, which was a surprise," said Dr Shivaprakash, a cardiac surgeon.

Were his arteries fine?
According to doctors, Dheeman had disproportionate enlargement of the artery (aorta) that carries pink blood to the whole body along with leakage of the valve (aortic valve) that guards the origin of this artery. "Commonly, these problems are encountered in the elderly wherein the unrelenting enlargement of the artery leads to its rupture — either within its own wall (dissection) or into the outside cavities or structures (leaking aneurysm). These events are usually fatal," said Dr Shivprakash.

When was the heart disease detected?
His mother Kamalika said that the heart problem was first detected while he was undergoing a normal check-up for his eye problem. "As a child, he had small health issues like squint in his eyes. He never had any symptoms that could indicate heart disease. He was undergoing check-up for the squint surgery when the doctor noticed enlargement on heart in 2012. While he was undergoing treatment, his condition didn't improve and doctors suggested surgery," said Kamalika.

Doctors said that the surgery for this lesion still represents a formidable complex heart surgery in adult. "This is a rare case of a child suffering from this disease. Dheeman's condition was unique and first of its kind in India," said Dr Shiv Kumar.

He is recuperating well
It has been three weeks since his surgery and doctors said he is recuperating well. "He had to miss his school exam. He is doing good and hope to see him going to school soon like any normal child," said Kamalika.
