The Mumbai crime branch received a tip-off that all the four wanted accused were holed up in Patiala, Punjab after they carried out the heist. The crime branch officers roped in the Rajpura police in Patiala, who nabbed the accused and handed them over to the Mumbai crime branch. "We have come to know that the main accused, Khan, has a criminal record and was involved in such robberies earlier too," said a crime branch officer. "The accused hid the stolen money with their friends and family members and we have recovered most of it," he added.

On January 16, Khan, who worked for a security agency in Mumbai, was entrusted the work of guarding an ATM van carrying cash to ATM kiosks across the city. Khan asked his three colleagues to stop the vehicle at Worli under the pretext of some work and later brought tea for his colleagues. The tea was later found to have been spiked with sedatives, police said.

As the van reached Vile Parle, the other guard and the custodian of cash fell unconscious and the driver Tariq pretended to fell drowsy. At that time, a Maruti Zen car waylaid the van and Khurshid, Mansoor and Mukhtar came out of it. The trio, with help of Khan and Tariq, opened the security locker and fled with the cash.

"Khan and Tariq did not drink their tea and stealthily threw it outside. When the two others in the vehicle fell unconscious, the Zen came and shifted the cash," the officer added. Khan then escaped and so did the other four.
