4 die after tree falls on wall, leading to its collapse on hutment

According to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials, the incident occurred around 2.57am when a tree from the Arc society on Vakola Pipeline Road collapsed on a wall, which damaged a nearby hutment.

Following incessant and heavy rains across the city over the last couple of days, four people died and five were left injured after a tree fell on a wall, which collapsed on a hutment in Vakola, Santa Cruz (East) in the wee hours of Monday. The incident brings the total number of deaths due to tree-falls to eight this year.

Santosh Arjun (6), Saroja Arjun (48), Kadvel Arjun (42), and Pramila Abhimanyu (28) were killed in the mishap, while those who suffered injuries were identified as Parmeshwari (3), Dhanlaxmi (19), Mare Chinnapayyan (15), Mangesha Vellayya (35), and 18-month-old Jayshree Raju.

According to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials, the incident occurred around 2.57am when a tree from the Arc society on Vakola Pipeline Road collapsed on a wall, which damaged a nearby hutment.
"Nine people were rushed to VN Desai Hospital, of which four were declared dead before arrival. The condition of the others is stable," said a civic official.

As many as 19 instances of tree-fall were witnessed in the city, of which 10 were in western suburbs, five in eastern suburbs and four in island city. Five instances of short circuit were reported across the city, but there were no injuries or casualties.

"The BMC gives Rsl lakh to family of the person who dies in a tree-fall incident on road. There was a case before the onset of monsoon, but we have cleared the compensation amount for that person," said joint municipal commissioner SS Shinde.

However, no compensation is given if a death occurs due to a tree-fall on private premises or society compounds. If the victim sustains lifelong disability, the BMC compensates him/her with Rs50,000 and free treatment.
Garden superintendent Vijay Hire was not available for comment.
