Four months after the work of parking plaza next to Thane station commenced, it has hit a roadblock. After the Central Railways (CR) wrote to the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) seeking permission to cut 36 trees for the project, a tussle has began between the two authorities. The civic body wants the CR to plant 180 trees on the same place as per the norms, but the railway authority is left in the lurch as there is no space.

In fact, four days ago, a building near platform No1 was demolished to make way for the parking plaza and now the CR has written to seek permission of TMC to axe 36 trees in the compound. The multi-level plaza is expected to make space for 2,000 bikes and is estimated to be completed by 2016.

"The CR has requested us to allow them to cut 36 trees and a meeting will be held to discuss the norms as 180 trees will have to be planted. At the same time, proceeding with this project is equally important and a team is looking after the development of the plaza," said a senior TMC official.

"The civic body wants to plant trees at the same location, but we are chalking out a plan to relocate the trees, which will be uprooted and it will not affect the trees if replanted," said a senior CR official.

Rajan Vichare, member of parliament, said, "We visited the parking plaza plot and a demolition was undertaken. The meeting will be held on December 6 and 7 at the civic headquarters with the CR officials to decide on further plan of action, keeping in mind the environmental laws."
