32-year-old man assaults wife, seeks divorce over birth of girl

Tuesday, 24 December 2013 - 6:41am IST | Place: Mumbai | Agency: DNA

That’s how strongly some people long for a male child! A 32-year-old man, whose wife had delivered a girl about three weeks ago, barged into the Bandra home of his in-laws on Sunday afternoon and allegedly assaulted his wife and her sister. The reason for the assault — he wanted a son.

The man, who was accompanied by his elder brother, is absconding while the brother has been arrested.

According to the police, the man’s in-laws live in Bandra (west). The newborn’s parents got married three years ago. Her father, Sharad, had wanted a male child all along. The man’s name has been changed so as not to give away the identity of his wife, considering the charges she has levelled against her husband.

An officer from Bandra police station said that  Sharad was livid on hearing that his wife had delivered a girl. “Soon after the child’s birth, he demanded that his wife  return to her parents’ home and even broached the subject of divorce,” said the officer, adding that Sharad had gone to his in-laws’ home to pursue the divorce matter. They got  into an argument and he left in a huff, said the officer.

Police sub-inspector MD Dorkar said that Sharad returned to the house after a while, this time with his brother and a couple of other relatives. He  threatened to disfigure his wife’s face by flinging acid if she did not agree to a divorce,

His wife’s sister, who has lodged the police complaint, alleged that Sharad and the others assaulted her and tore the kurta she was wearing.

“She has also said that Sharad tried to fling the newborn,” said Dorkar. A complaint of trespass, assault and use of criminal force with the intent to outrage a woman’s modesty has been registered under various sections of the Indian Penal Code.
