People with psychological disorders accounted for the majority of patients admitted to municipal healthcare centres in Mumbai for treatment followed by those suffering from high blood pressure and diabetes, said a survey conducted by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.

According to the survey conducted between October 2015 to September 2017, a whopping 31 percent were detected with psychiatric illnesses. The report is based on an extensive research conducted over a period of two years on the types of ailments and morbidity patterns of patients admitted in municipal health centres.

Dr Avinash Supe, Dean of Major BMC hospitals, have opined that there has been a 10 per cent hike in the number of people suffering from mental illness in the last 5-10 years. He has also attributed this to the major lifestyle changes leading to higher levels of stress, anxiety and depression.

The survey was conducted with 5,59,954 patients in its four major hospitals — KEM, Sion, Nair and Cooper hospital. The survey documented 1,74,379 patients detected with psychiatric illnesses which constituted 31.14 per cent of patients .

Dr Shubhangi Parkar, Head of Psychiatric Department in KEM Hospital said, "People come up with problems like sleep disturbances, fatigue, tiredness and anxiety. The identification is more important and it is also important to understand what causes stress and depression. In the last few years, life has become too fast and difficult."

"The fast pace of life with no time to relax causes stress. Also, the crunch in job opportunities despite people obtaining higher education also leads to trouble. People have to sacrifice on their dream jobs which may also lead to depression. The number of psychiatric disorders are observed more in females than males. Females generally have varied roles and they are overburdened," Dr Parkar added.

The survey was carried out by civic health officials on the instructions of municipal commissioner Ajoy Mehta.
