The Matunga police have arrested a 30-year-old man on charges of raping a 20-year-old woman from Wadala.

The police had initially registered a molestation case, but added rape charges on Tuesday after medical tests of the complainant revealed that suspect Ishwar Kesgodan had resorted to finger penetration.

Under the new anti-rape law, finger penetration has been included in the expanded definition of rape.

The police said both the complainant and Kesgodan are known to each other. She had first approached the police stating that she was molested by Kesgodan. Accordingly, the Matunga cops registered a first information report.

Sub-inspector Deepika Dangarne from Matunga police station said, "According to the medical reports, the woman was subjected to finger penetration by the accused. We have now registered a rape case against the accused."
