Neelam Kumar, a teacher at Apeejay School, Nerul, was felicitated by City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra (Cidco) on December 27 for her contribution in the field of teaching for 30 long years.

Being bestowed with the Best Teacher Award in the pre-primary section, Kumar says the medal and certificate will keep reminding her of the beautiful journey she has been a part of.

While she has taught primary students also, a major chunk of her career has been spent with the pre-primary students. “While one has to be really patient with the little ones, it is gratifying when they become attached to you after you break the ice. They make my day,” she exclaims.

Kumar, who started teaching at the age of 21, says she had an innate flair for teaching and used to spend her initial days tutoring kids in her neighbourhood.

She has spent 28 years of her career with Apeejay School and loves the systematic functioning of all the staff members. Kumar believes that seeing students grow up and attain success is the biggest gift for a teacher and is happy to be in touch with many of her old students. “Many are married and have kids; they are doing extremely well in life. It is highly satisfying when they try to get in touch through any available means. Most are my friends on Facebook too,” she adds.

“For students to remember and respect a teacher even years after they leave the school, it is important for the teacher to have a friendly and understanding relationship with them. Inculcating discipline does not entail being harsh. This is all the more relevant today,” says Kumar.
