Three labourers were killed and two others injured when the chain of their carriage that was connected to a crane broke, throwing them into a sewage tunnel outside the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Powai on Monday.

The labourers were part of a micro tunneling work carried out by Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) for an underground sewage pipeline.

Private contractors, appointed by the BMC, were carrying out the tunnelling work 10 metres below the ground level when the accident took place. The dead have been identified as Satyanarayan Singh (32), Rameshwar Samay (42) and Vishwanath Singh (35). The Powai Police have registered an accidental death report (ADR). The two injured have been identified as Pareshnath Singh (49) and Ramnath Singh (48).

According to police, the incident took place around 6 pm. After the digging work, the labourers were being moved out of the manhole, when the chain of the crane lifting their carriage snapped and they were thrown back into the manhole.

"An ADR has been registered and we are investigating further. After the work was over, the crane operator was pulling up five labourers from a 10-metre deep manhole, but the chain broke resulting in the death of three," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 10) Navinchandra Reddy.

All the five were taken to Rajawadi Hospital where doctors declared three of them dead on arrival. The condition of two injured labourers are stable and are currently under observation, according to Rajawadi Hospital officials.

"Ramnath has injured his chest and shoulder, while Pareshnath has fractured both his legs. We have kept them both under observation," said Dr Vidya Thakur, Medical Superintendent, Rajawadi Hospital.

Meanwhile, Santosh Kumar Dhone, Assistant Commissioner, S Ward (BMC), and officials from the BMC remained unreachable.
