The anti-extortion cell of the city police has arrested three people, including an alleged aide of fugitive gangster Chhota Shakeel, for allegedly threatening a builder. The threat was allegedly issued at the behest of Shakeel and one of the accused in the case was earlier arrested in the 1993 serial bomb blasts, but was later acquitted.

He? was also allegedly involved in the JJ Hospital shoot-out case and had earlier issued threats to an MLA in Mumbai.

The arrested people have been identified as Hanif Ismail Sheikh, Faisal Juneja and Mohammed Ahmed Mohammed Yasin Mansoori alias Langda.

The complainant runs a business with his brother and has an office in a shopping centre at LT Marg. The complainant also knows Juneja, who is in the real estate business.

According to the police, in February 2014, Juneja had met the complainant and told him that there is a godown co-owned by him and his brother-in-law Sheikh, which he wanted to sell since he was in need of money. Juneja, Sheikh and the complainant later went to see the said godown at Masjid Bunder.

The complainant liked the property and was ready to buy it for Rs1.25 crore. He was then told that he would get possession in 30 days, after making the payment. The complainant then arranged for the money and made the payment, entering into an agreement.

"The complainant had alleged that he did not get possession even after the promised time and in April 2016, a relative of Juneja's informed the complainant that Chhota Shakeel does not want to sell off the said property since Shakeel, too, is a stakeholder in the property. The complainant, however, requested that he either be given possession of the property or his money back. On May 3, the complainant got a call from an international number, but he did not pick up the call out of fear. On May 20, the complainant got a call from Juneja and they held a meeting at the former's office. Langda, too, was present at the meeting. Langda told the complainant that he had spoken to Shakeel and that Shakeel had a message for the complainant. This was that he should not call up Juneja or Sheikh and not discuss the godown issue any further. In fact, the complainant was told that he will have to cough up more money, or else he would be killed. On May 23, the complainant filed a case in this regard at Azad Maidan police station, after which those named as the accused in the case were arrested. We have seized three mobiles and six cards from the arrested persons," a police officer said.
