The air quality of the city stayed in the 'Good Category' on Tuesday as it marked its second-best recorded Air Quality Index (AQI) at 22.

Meanwhile, IMD officials confirmed that rains would be arriving in the city after June 22, with a weather system that is likely to bring rains back in several states including Maharashtra.

On Monday, Mumbai AQI at 18 created a new record as its best since 2015. System of Air Quality Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR), that monitors AQI at 10 stations in Mumbai on Tuesday showed that all the stations had low levels of various pollutants.

Explaining the reasons, a senior researcher said that Mumbai always has a very high concentration of particulate matter, PM 2.5 and PM 10, which are the suspended particles in the air, but the current strong winds and rains have reduced their concentration drastically. "This is common in coastal cities especially during the monsoon season," said the official.

The PM 2.5 levels, which is the smallest size pollutant known to cause respiratory illnesses and worsens the condition of those suffering from ailments like asthma and bronchitis, was in Good Category at all the stations. The PM 2.5 air quality at five stations was reported to be in the twenties including Borivali (29), Malad (28), BKC (25), Mazgaon (25), Colaba(26) while in two stations including Worli and Navi- Mumbai, the levels were under 10.

"This trend is likely to continue and it's more due to the strong winds and not just rains as Mumbai is not experiencing heavier spells of rain," said an official from SAFAR.

An AQI level between 0-50 is categorised Good, while 51-100 is Satisfactory, and 101-200, 201-300 and 301-400 is in Moderate, Poor and Very Poor categories. In June, best air quality record was first on June 4 when AQI was 34, after which on June 8, AQI recorded was 32 and on Monday, AQI at 18 has been best since June 2015 when AQI monitoring was started making Tuesday's AQI at 22 second best this month.
