The Kalyan zilla parishad elections stands to be cancelled as none of the candidates filed nominations even on the last day, which was January 13. While the election commission says they might think of re-election, the villagers are in no mood to co-operate.

On Tuesday, the Kalyan tehsildar's office received no nominations for the elections which are scheduled to be held on January 28. "The sole candidate who had filed the nomination as an independent candidate, also withdrew his file," said Kiran Suravase, Kalyan tehsildar. "So now there will be no elections," he added.

Madhavi Sardeshmukh, district deputy electoral officer, confirmed this decision said, "We have sent the report to the Election Commission and it will decide the next step. There might be re-elections, but we are not aware when they will be held," she said.

The 27 villages, which have still not been included in Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation, are adamant on getting their own municipal council. "In 2002 we were excluded from KDMC because the population of these villages was just 1.35 lakh," said Gulab Vaze, an official of Sangharsh Samiti, which is representing the villages.

"But today the population has gone up in these villages, and so it is important to have their own corporation. The population stands at over 5 lakh," he added.

On December 29, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis – who had visited Kalyan – had promised that these villages' development plan will soon be cleared and that happened the next day. "Whether to hold a re-election is the prerogative of the EC. They can do their formalities, but we will try to meet the CM again and request him to look into our demand. If required, we will approach the court," Vaze said.

Kalyan MP Shrikant Shinde said he supports the villagers. "The CM recently announced that these 27 villages' development plan has been approved. So, either give them their own municipal council or include them in KDMC," said Shinde.
