The police have busted a gang of conmen with the arrest of three people on the charge of duping 27 people with the promise of cheaper flats under government schemes. The Saki Naka police have recovered Rs 2.4 crore from them.

The accused have been identified as Pravin Patil, Dipesh Angale, and Pratik Patil.

According to the police, the accused lured the victims by telling them that they could get apartments at various locations in Mumbai Metropolitan region under schemes of the Maharashtra Housing And Area Development Authority.

The police said the trio after promising them flats in the cheaper rate, would give victims fake documents of MHADA and allotment letters to gain their trust. The incident came to light after the fraudsters promised a victim a flat in one of Thane's plush area.

The accused handed over the victim what they called a MHADA allotment letter after making him cough up Rs 20 lakh for it. When the victim went to Thane, he did not find the building at the plot mentioned in the letter. Realising that he had been cheated, he approached the police.

The accused used to prepare fake MHADA documents to gain the trust of the victims, and after taking money from people they used to hand over the documents.

"We arrested the accused after their role was established," said Avinash Dharmadhikari, senior inspector of Sakinaka police station.

"We have recovered Rs 2.40 crore from them along with fake documents of MHADA. We suspect the involvement of more people in the case and our probe is on," said another police officer.

The main accused in the case is the father of Suhas Patil who died in the year 2016.
