In a shocking case that stinks of honour killing, a 26-year-old man was allegedly abducted and killed by relatives of his 21-year-old wife. The woman's relatives had opposed their marriage.

Brijesh Gupta, and Kajal (name changed), a beautician belonging to a Rajasthani family, were neighbhours in Govandi. They had fallen in love around two years ago. Facing opposition to their affair, the couple eloped on March 4, 2016 and later got married. Meanwhile, Kajal's family had registered a missing person's complaint with the Govandi police. But when the police found out that the couple was legally married, they refused to bring Kajal home to her family.

Eventually, Brijesh, a graphic designer, and Kajal began a life together in Wadala. A year later, on March 23, Gupta and Kajal were invited by the latter's cousin brothers on the pretext of sorting out issues, and get their marriage solemnised as per traditional Rajasthani customs.

Although Kajal was invited, the young woman had stayed away saying that she had to report for work at a beauty parlour in Wadala.

"The three accused picked up Gupta from Wadala and brought him to Rawalpada in Dahisar on the pretext of sorting out issues between the two families. They confined him to a flat and then stabbed him, which led to his death.

Hearing Gupta scream, neighbours came running and rushed him to Shatabdi Hospital. He was later shifted to KEM Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries," said Subhash Sawant, Senior Inspector of Dahisar police station.

"My relatives had planned to kill us. I refused to meet them because I had to leave for work. I asked my husband not to go with them, but in order to keep my family happy, he obliged and they killed him," Gupta's inconsolable wife told DNA. She is the complainant in the case.

Rajbahadur Gupta, father of the deceased, said, "We are shocked. A year into his marriage, my son was killed by our own neighbhours. We want justice and the case should be brought to trial in a fast-track court."

Gupta was cremated at his native place in Madhya Pradesh. The accused have been booked for kidnapping and murder. They have been remanded in police custody till March 28.
