A 26-year-old woman delivered a baby girl in a Mumabi suburban train at Dadar railway station on Monday night. The woman, Salma Shaikh, was travelling to KEM Hospital for her delivery, when she went into labour.

The incident happened at around 10.17 pm when the lady was traveling in a Central line train from Kalyan and had reached Dadar station.

On duty doctor at the One Rupee Clinic, Prajwalit Sonkamble, delivered the baby in the train with the help of RPF lady constables. "The health of both the baby girl and mother was stable, and they were doing well. The mother and child were later admitted to KEM Hospital for further medical treatment," said Dr Rahul Ghule, founder of One Rupee Clinic initiative. The baby weighs 2.5kg.

Earlier in July this year, a baby was delivered with the help of a One Rupee Clinic doctor at Ghatkopar station. Gudia Sheikh (26) delivered the baby while travelling from Titwala to Kurla with her husband. She, too, experience sudden labour pain at the station.

The objective of the 'One Rupee Clinic' initiative is to provide medical treatment to the general public and to address emergency cases at crowded stations. Ghatkopar railway station has the highest number of footfalls followed by Dadar and Kurla.

"It is the second delivery we handled, and both infants born were baby girls. It proves the necessity for one rupee clinics in emergency situations at crowded places in Mumbai, especially crowded railway stations," added Dr Ghule.
