After a spate of tragedies, most of them man-made, the one thing that is clear is that government officials have mastered the art of self-preservation.

Barring a few suspensions, which are little more than tokenism, civic authorities have acquired an unassailable immunity to any kind of accountability, even when Mumbaikars die for no fault of theirs.

Not one public servant has been named in the FIRs in the Kamala Mills fire that claimed 14 lives.

As DNA reported yesterday, a 185-page inquiry report on a massive fire at the Make in India week in Girgaum Chowpatty last year blamed only the organisers, but no government officials.

Following each tragedy, cases are filed against errant owners but government officials are almost never named, as if they are utterly blameless. The truth is that the alleged violations of rules took place done under the very noses of, perhaps even with the connivance of, officials duty-bound to prevent them.

It is time the justice system started naming, shaming, and booking government officials who abdicate their duties. Their hands are stained with the blood of innocents.
