Demanding the government to implement 7th pay revision scheme for all teachers, 25,000 teachers from 11 universities — under the Maharashtra Federation of University and College Teacher's Organization (MFUCTO) — decided to go on an indefinite strike from Tuesday. The professors had been protesting on and off since August 6.

They have also been demanding the release of 71 days salary of the teachers who had gone on strike earlier, lifting the ban on appointment and filling up all vacant posts of teachers in colleges on a regular basis and as per teacher-student ratio of 1:20.

On August 6, MFUCTO started protesting by wearing black badges. They held several such demonstrations and did not report to work on September 11.

While Education Minister Vinod Tawde met several teacher organisations, including MFUCTO on Tuesday and assured them that the government will fulfill their demands.

Some teacher organisations such as (MUCTA), affiliated to Akhil Bharatiya Rashtriya Shaikshik Mahasangh (ABRSM), did not participate in the strike.

Professor Dr Vaibhav Narawade, President, MUCTA, said, "Our teachers did not participate in the indefinite strike because it not only affects the teachers' working schedule but also the students'. We were not paid for the 71-day strike last time. Who will take responsibility for that? Tawde has also questioned why the government should pay for those who did not work on the given days. He assured that the government will increase the remuneration and that vacant posts will be filled soon. Very few college teachers from the city participated in the protest."

Madhu Paranjpe, General Secretary of Bombay University and College Teachers' Union (BUCTU), said, "The organisation will decide tomorrow (Wednesday) whether to call off the strike or not after getting the minutes of the meeting from the education minister's office.
