23,000 housing societies get notice over waste segregation

Also, 1227 bulk generators pulled up for not treating wet waste at source

With the plan of making waste segregation mandatory from October, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) solid waste management department (SWD) has issued notices to over 23,000 housing societies across the city since January this year. These societies have failed to comply the norms laid down by the SWD of BMC for garbage disposal.

According to officials from the SWD, these housing societies have been served notices for not segregating wet and dry waste.

The department has also served to approximately 1227 societies where over 100 kg waste is generated every day, or is occupying over 20,000 sq metre area to compost their wet waste in their premises only. According to officials from the SWD, notices have been served to almost all wards. However, H West ward that includes areas in the western suburbs like Bandra, Santacruz and Khar tops with over 4500 notices issued. "The punitive measure has been taken to prevent garbage being dumped in the existing dumping grounds at Mulund and Deonar that have reached their full capacity," said an official from SWD. He added that the effort has brought result to some extent as garbage generation has come down to around 8200 metric tonnes per day from 9500 metric tonnes about a year ago.

In addition, the BMC has issued notices to five-star hotels, restaurants, sports clubs, etc across the city where waste generations is more than 100 kgs per day or occupying above 20,000 sq metre to start facilities like organic waste converter, vermi composting. According to data available with the SWD, the civic body has so far identified a total 1236 bulk generators societies across the city and 1227 of them have been served notices.

If societies fail to comply with norms of garbage disposal, the civic body must take punitive measures to send out a strong message on waste disposal. Waste segregation entails separating biodegradable waste from non-biodegradable waste for proper recycling.
