23-year-old 'singer' arrested for pushing 18-year-old to suicide

How did the duo become friends?
The accused, Raju Sonune, posed as a girl and befriended the deceased, Abhishek Rasam on Facebook. He later tried extorting money from him by blackmailing the 18-year-old. According to the Borivli police, the duo became friends on Facebook in the first week of February after

Sonune posed as a girl named Priyanka. Sudhir Mali, PI, Borivli police said: "The two became friends and began conversing on phone. Sonune spoke in the voice of a woman. They also exchanged obscene photographs."

How did the accused threaten the student?
Sonune later posed as Priyanka's 'brother' and called Rasam saying he was aware of the Facebook chats between him and Priyanka. He threatened to file a case with the police for posting obscene pictures and harassing his 'sister'.

What drove him to take the extreme step?
When Rasam begged him to not do this, Sonune asked him to cough up Rs 8,000. However, when Rasam was unable to gather the money, he decided to take the extreme step, said the police.

How did the incident come to light?
Three weeks after his suicide, Rasam's family got to know that he had asked a cousin to lend him the cash after narrating the chain of events. While a case of suicide was registered initially, the Borivli cops have now lodged a case of abetment to suicide.

The police tracked the accused through an account number that he had given Rasam to transfer the amount. Sonune was arrested from Panvel on Wednesday evening.

How did the student fall for the ruse?
In his statement, the 23-year-old told the police that he was a singer and was able to speak like a woman by changing his voice whenever required, and therefore, the victim believed him. Inspector Mali added: "He wanted the money to splurge. We are checking if he has fooled other people like this in the past."

Sonune was arrested for abetment to suicide, obscenity and under other relevant sections of the IT Act.
