A 23-year-old woman in Worli killed herself by consuming poison after the wife of her lover - also her neighbour - learned that she was having an affair with him. The husband, too, consumed sleeping pills when he feared that his wife would complain to the police against him.

The deceased woman has been identified as Supriya Ashok Patil, a resident of BMC staff quarters at E Moses Road.

According to the police, Patil was having an affair with her neighbour Jyotiba Gurav, 39, for the past few years. "On Thursday, Gurav's wife learnt about the affair between her husband and Patil and had a quarrel with her husband. When Gurav's wife went to record a non-cognisable complaint against her husband, Patil came to know of it and consumed poison. Gurav then consumed sleeping pills," said senior police inspector Vinayak Kulkarni of Worli police station.

He added that on returning home from the police station, Gurav's wife learnt about the incident and informed the police.

The cops then rushed Patil and Gurav to Nair Hospital where Patil was declared dead, and Gurav is still receiving treatment.
