23-year-old immolates self, mother-in-law held

The Ulhasnagar police have arrested a 50 years old mother-in-law for allegedly harassing 23 years old as she allegedly poured kerosene on herself and later set herself ablaze. The mother-in-law forced her to bring cash from her father to spend it on daily basis.

The deceased Pooja Tiwari,23 a resident of Balkrishna Nagar in Ulhasnagar got married to Amit Tiwari,24 six years ago while tensions started between the mother-in-law Pramilla Tiwari,50 after she allegedly demanded money from her daughter-in-law. The complainant Hiraman Pandey in the complaint have stated to the Ulhasnagar police that the deceased was tortured physically and mentally by the in-law which pushed her to end life by setting her ablaze.

"After the incident she was rushed to the nearby hospital but she died during treatment as her family members came few days later to file the complaint after completing the final rites and as per the complaint we have arrested the accused", said a Ulhasnagar police official.

"We have arrested the accused under section 304 (b) (Dowry death) and 306 (abetment of suicide) of the Indian Penal Code and will produce the accused in Ulhasnagar court", said VB Kajari, Investigation officer, Ulhasnagar police station.

"After adequate investigation we have filed the complaint and have made the arrest as prima facie it seems that the woman was harassed by her mother-in-law which pushed her to end life", said Kajari.
