2,223 structures to be hit by Metro III

A total of 2,223 structures would be affected for the construction of Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ metro rail and the project affected would be rehabilitated and resettled at Kurla, Oshiwara, Chakala, Vidyavihar, Wadala and south Mumbai.

A total of 2,223 structures would be affected for the construction of Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ metro rail and the project affected would be rehabilitated and resettled at Kurla, Oshiwara, Chakala, Vidyavihar, Wadala and south Mumbai.

According to the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) those slum structures encroached upon on public land would be shifted to Bhakti Park at Wadala as well as Wonderland in Oshiwara. They would be given tenements of 225 sq. ft.

Similarly, other encroachments would be resettled as per the Slum Rehabilitation policy to Premier in Kurla East, Kurla West, Chakala, Andheri, etc. At these places they size of units would be 269 sq. ft.

However, on Monday Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had announced that those families residing in legal structures would be given double the size of their homes. Families living in homes up to 300 sq. ft will get 600 sq ft after redevelopment. Whereas, those living in 300 sq ft or above will get 30% more area.

Attempts are being made to accommodate such affected families in the same area as they have been staying for decades now. Such affected structures include chawls and buildings in the areas of Girgaon, Kalbadevi and Mahim.

As per the information received under the Right to Information Act by activist Anil Galgali, a total of 2,223 structures are getting affected out of which 1,544 are residential structures, 576 commercial, 31 a combination of residential and commercial whereas 72 structures are neither residential nor commercial.

On the subject of rehousing affected families in legal buildings, Ashwini Bhide, Managing Director of MMRC added, "We will not remove or evict anyone before making arrangements for their permanent rehabilitation in the same area while implementing the metro rail corridor."
