A 22-year-old man's dream of getting married and building a house using stolen money crashed within a week after the police picked him from his village in a Naxal-hit belt of Jharkhand.

Chintu Kumar, alias Jivlab Yadav had made off with Rs22 lakh from the house of a realtor in Goregaon (West) on February 27. The police have also arrested an accomplice of Yadav from Bihar and recovered Rs21 lakh.

The police said complainant Sudeep Chakravarthy, a resident of Galaxy Royale, Prem Nagar, had hired Yadav after his househelp went on a long leave. "Chakravarthy had to go out of city for two days. He kept the money in a suitcase and put it in a cupboard. His family too was away," said Senior Inspector Arun Jadhav from Goregaon police station.

While cleaning the house, Yadav stumbled upon the suitcase and saw the cash. The officer said, "The accused told us that he wanted to get married and build a house in his village in Giridih district of Jharkhand. So he fled with the money."

On his return, Chakravarthy found Yadav missing. When he checked the house, he couldn't find his suitcase too. Yadav's phone was also switched off. He then filed a police complaint.

Jadhav said they contacted the complainant's servant, who had introduced Yadav to the family. "We spoke to his relatives and got the address of his village. His phone location was also traced," added Jadhav.

A four-member team went to the Naxal-hit area. "We cautiously moved around and arrested the accused. He said that he had handed over the cash to his accomplice Vinod Yadav from Bhagalpur in Bihar. We recovered Rs21 lakh from Vinod."

The duo were brought to Mumbai on Thursday. They have been remanded in police custody till March 13.
