The JJ Marg police on Saturday arrested a 22-year-old man for allegedly groping an 18-year-old girl. The girl happens to be a distant relative of Bilal Shaikh, the accused.
According to the police, the victim is a resident of North Dinazpur district in West Bengal. On April 22, she left home saying she was leaving for college and met Raj, her boyfriend, at Malda railway station. The two then came to Howrah railway station where Raj abandoned her.
A 25-year-old woman from Masjid Bunder saw the girl weeping at Howrah station. When she asked her about the reason, the victim requested the woman to take to Mumbai along with her. They took a train and landed in city on April 24.
The woman introduced the victim to her family and took her around Mumbai. The woman also made the victim speak to her father in West Bengal so that she could return home safely. The father then asked the girl to get in touch with their relative, Shaikh, a resident of Falkland Road in Nagpada.
Around 1.30pm on Saturday, Shaikh went to the woman's residence. He then took the girl to a friend's place in Bhendi Bazaar area and groped her. When she shouted for help, Shaikh fled from the place. The victim then lodged a police complaint. Shaikh was nabbed from the Nagpada area.
"Shaikh has been arrested under sections sections 341 (wrongful restraint) and 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) of Indian Penal Code," said an officer from JJ Marg police station.
