Twenty women of the postal department of the Maharashtra & Goa circle ran on March 11 to prove that the department has young blood even after 218 years.

Supporting the cause of girl child education in the Stayfree DNA I Can Women’s Half Marathon, 20 young officers from various post offices (POs) in Mumbai came together to run on March 11. Sonal Shirsat, who works at the Jogeshwari PO and Pallavi Mahapsekar, from the Kandivli PO, told DNA, “We are here just because of our education. I wish that all girls in India get the right education. Empowerment is a consequence of education.”

The women couldn’t run for more than 5km as they couldn’t get time to practice, but they are determined to run a longer distance next year. “We hardly get time to walk more than 2-3km. But now we will make it a point to walk every day and take part in a longer run next year,” said Shirsat.

Abha Singh, director of postal services (Maharashtra & Goa circle) who was present at the venue and ran with her team, said, “My department is 218-years-old, but as you can see, it is as young as ever.”
