The city crime branch on Monday made their 20th arrest in the red sandalwood smuggling case. The suspect, identified as Rahim Baba, is alleged to have provided parking spaces to the trucks near the docks that used to come from Karnataka carrying red sandalwood.

According to deputy commissioner of police (detection) Dhananjay Kulkarni, on receipt of specific information, the crime branch team arrested Baba from Dongri in south Mumbai.

"We are now clear that the consignment of red sandalwood was sourced from Karnataka and not Andhra Pradesh, but are yet to trace the exact location," said another police officer.

DCP Kulkarni said, "Baba would provide parking spaces near the docks to the trucks that used to come from Karnataka with red sandalwood. He is a close confidante of oil mafia kingpin Mohammad Ali."

On December 4, two boats Marvan-10 and Ganga Sagar, were intercepted in a joint operation by the Indian Coast Guard and Directorate of Revenue Intelligence officials around 80 nautical miles off Mumbai's coast. Sacks of maize and logs of red sandalwood were found in Marvan-10. Some logs were also seized from Ganga Sagar. The police had seized 23 tonnes of red-sandalwood worth Rs 9 crore from both the boats. The case was handed over to the city crime branch for investigation.

Investigation had revealed that the said consignment was meant to be sent to Dubai.
