The Mumbai Police has registered a total of 202 cases against different Ganapati mandals across the city for violating HC guidelines to curb noise pollution.

Police said: "Strict action was taken against defiant mandals to send a message across. We wanted people to take the guidelines issued seriously. Going soft on them would have encouraged more violations in the future."

The defaulters will be fined as recommended by the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board," said Manjunath Shinge, Operations, Deputy Commissioner of Police.

These apart, police also took action against reckless drivers. Eight people were apprehended during the nakabandi on Marine Drive on Sunday morning.

"To curb the menace of reckless and negligent driving, a nakabandi was arranged at Marine Drive. A total of 42 people were caught for riding without a helmet and 11 drivers were caught for other offences on the final day of Ganapati immersion," said Vilas Gangawane, Senior Inspector, Marine Drive Police Station.
