2,000 pledges for organ donation at Hiranandani marathon

It was a proud moment for Ghodbunder Road as more than 10,000 people ran for humanity on Sunday at the third edition of Hirananadani Half Marathon at Thane. This edition's slogan – Run for a new life – was aimed at promoting organ donation.

The event was split into four categories — half marathon of 21.097km, a green run spanning 10 km, a dream run of 4 km and a junior run of 3 km. The total prize money for the event, which is recognised by the Athletics Federation of India, is Rs 17.80 lakh.

This edition of the marathon not only aims at generating awareness among people on organ donation, but the entire participation fee collected has been donated to an NGO associated with this cause. Madhu Menon, president of the Hiranandani Residents Welfare Association, said, "Like every year, this edition too the marathon was a big hit as it received an overwhelming response from the people. Participants from all age group were very enthusiastic about being a part of noble cause."

The marathon has twin objectives. Madhu Menon said, "It achieved both the objectives. From the participation charges, Rs 20 lakh was donated to three NGOs whereas nearabout 2,000 participants pledged organ donation." Thane MP Rajan Vichare and city mayor Sanjay More wer present for the final presentation ceremony.
