200 Mumbra women become police mitras

To tackle the increasing crime rate and better the image of Mumbra, over 200 local women came forward to become police mitras or friends of the police in a public function held on Thursday. The suburb is frequently in the headlines for illegal construction and other crimes.

The function was held at the Mumbra police station, where women from all age groups – college students to elderly – volunteered to help cops in the initiative. The volunteers included doctors, lawyers, psychologists, corporators, chartered accountants, school principals, teachers and journalists. These women took the pledge to be the eyes and ears of the police and nip crime in the bud.

"It is for the first time that a police station has such a huge number of mitras, that too women," said DCP Abhishek Trimukhe (zone I), who gave the volunteers their police mitra identity cards and caps.

Police mitra is a police-community partnership model, which plays a preventive role in curbing crime. The volunteers also act as informers. During times of distress, such as a building collapse or a big event, they help cops regulate the crowd.
