A 20-year-old man from Mumbra is absconding after allegedly stabbing his girlfriend to death in a fit of rage. The incident took place on Tuesday morning near a public toilet.

The police said accused Swapnil Jadhav was in a relationship with a Muslim girl for the past few years. However, their families were opposed to the liaison.

The couple would often meet, but recently had a fight after which they went back to their respective homes.

On April 29, the victim and her younger sister were going to a public toilet near the bypass road in Mumbra, when Jadhav approached spot. As she came out, he asked her sister to go home, saying he wanted to talk his girlfriend in private.

The little girl told the police that she had taken a few steps when she heard her sister's screams. Apparently Jadhav had a tiff with the girl. In a fit of rage, he pulled out a knife and slit her throat and stabbed her in the stomach. Jadhav then from fled the spot.

The victim was taken to a hospital, but declared dead on arrival.

Investigation Officer L Nadaf from Mumbra police station said, "We have taken the statement of the victim's sister. Further investigation is on."
