A 2 year old child died at the Nashik civil hospital on Wednesday morning after he was admitted in critical condition the day before. The child incidentally died when the Maharashtra minister for Women and Child Welfare Pankaja Munde was on a tour to Mokhada district to review child malnourishment.

Rahul Wadkar, a resident of Ruighar village in Boghdari grampanchyat in Palgarh was admitted to the sub-hospital at Jawahar on September 19. "His condition worsened and we though of shifting him to Nashik civil hospital for better treatment. The mother left the child with his grandmother, who had to be convinced before shifting him finally on September 20, 2016", stated Vivek Pandit, of Shramajivi Sanghatana, who has been working on malnourishment in the region.

Assistant civil surgeon Dr Hole stated that the boy weighed only 5 kgs and was suffering from anemia which had led to infections along with high fever and pneumonia.

"Malnourishment is a serious problem in the region. The poor tribals remain unemployed till October post the sowing season. Remaining unemployed for such a long span leaves them with no money to feed themselves and their children," Pandit said.

The government run Village Child Development Centre scheme wherein children were provided nutritious diet through anganwadis was stopped in 2015 due to lack of funds. Pandit pointed out that according to the government report published in August 2016, there are 7240 malnourished children in this region. The Shramajivi Sanghatana, along with Vitthu Mauali Charitable Trust and Vidhayak Sansad group had started a camp to diagnose and treat children with malnourishment. "Children who stayed with their parents at the camp were given nutritious diet and treatment with the help of doctors and philanthropists. However in March 2016 the government announced a concentrated programme to deal with the problem. With the last case of malnourishment death in Sagar Wagh, the camps were restarted, informed Pandit.
