There were two incidents of trees collapsing at Sewri and Nagpada on Sunday. No one was hurt in the incidents. The fire brigade said one of the incidents occurred at Sewri Naka on Acharya Dhonde Marg. There was no damage to life or property.

However, in the other incident on Maulana Shaukat Ali Road, the sections of a tree that collapsed fell on a car parked there. No one was in the vehicle at the time.

Last year, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had hired 22 agencies to survey the condition of trees and trim those sections that might collapse. About 18,750 trees were trimmed and 711 dead trees or those in a dangerous condition were removed. The work is continuing in preparation for the monsoon when such incidents are more frequent. The BMC has provided Rs5 crore for this work in the annual budget this year.

The civic administration plans to also set up a helpline in each of the 24 wards to monitor these incidents from from June.
