The death of two senior citizen sisters who were found dead at their Chembur residence on Thursday afternoon. The CCTV footage outside the flat shows no movement near their flat since Tuesday afternoon. The police are now awaiting the post-mortem report to ascertain the cause of death.

The police said that the deceased women, identified as Mohini, 70 and Basanti Jethwani, 75, were found dead in their sixth floor flat at Trishul Apartments, at Sindhi Colony in Chembur on Thursday afternoon.

"On Wednesday I had visited the flat of Jethwani' to remind them about the maintenance money they had to pay to the society. I rang the bell repeatedly, but nobody opened the door. I then informed the secretary about the same. We assumed that the women must have gone out," said watchman of the building.

While speaking to dna, a resident of the society, who requested anonymity, said, Mohini and Basanti were living in the society since past two decades. They were total four siblings, including a brother. The brother and one of the sisters had expired years ago and since then Mohini and Basanti had been staying in their flat.

"Foul smell was emanating from flat of Jethwani' after which I called one of their friends. The friend, who stays in the same complex rushed to the spot and we tried to open the flat using a duplicate key, which the women had given to their friend. But we could not open the door through the key as probably another lock was used from inside apart from the auto-lock," said the secretary, who is also next door neighbour of Jethwani'.

He added, the police was then informed and soon a police team rushed to the spot. The police then called the fire brigade after which the fire brigade officials managed to unlock the door. "On opening the door we found Mohini and Basanti lying on the floor.

"Both were unmarried and real sisters. They don't have any close relatives staying nearby. When the police team reached the spot the door was closed from inside. On inspecting the footage of CCTV installed outside flat of Jethwani, we learnt that they had accepted the newspaper on Tuesday at 2.30 pm and since then no movement seen thereafter. It mostly appears to be a case of suicide since no external injuries were found on the body," said an officer from Chembur police station.

"Our probe revealed that Basanti was unwell. On Tuesday Basanti had got unconscious and had fallen in the toilet of their flat. Mohini, who is not so healthy to have tendered help to Basanti, then called up her friend staying in the next building for help. The friends then reached home and handled the situation. On Thursday when we entered the house, we found Basanti lying down the bed, it seems she had fallen off the bed and Mohini would have panicked seeing this. Mohini was found near the door and it appears that she would have gone towards the door to seek help, but too would have collapsed," said another police officer.

As per the officer, the one-bedroom-hall-kitchen flat of Jethwani' was in a complete mess. "There were newspapers everywhere in the house. Kitchen was in a complete mess with water and left overs everywhere. Furnitures were old and in broken condition. It appeared that the house was not cleaned since past four to five months," said the officials.

"We have sent the bodies for post-mortem to Rajawadi Hospital. The exact cause and time of death will be ascertain only after post-mortem is conducted. However, we are probing from all possible angles," said deputy commissioner of police, zone VI, Shahaji Umap.

The police have registered an accidental death case in the matter.
