There is some good news for commuters travelling from eastern suburbs and Navi Mumbai to South Mumbai. The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport Undertaking (BEST) will introduce two bus routes on the Eastern Freeway from Saturday.

The new service will drastically cut short commuting time. As per the plans unveiled by the BEST on Wednesday, both the two bus routes are “corridor” services. “The plan is to operate C-8 between Mantralaya and Shivaji Nagar, and C-50 between World Trade Centre and Vashi bus stand,” said a BEST spokesperson.

However, the BEST administration is not going all out to provide the service for the entire day.

These two bus routes will be limited to just eight services, that is two each in the morning from Shivaji Nagar and Vashi and vice-versa. Thus, the message is clear it will be operating the services only for office-going crowd and there will not be all day services for other commuters.

According to transport experts, only 20% of the bus commuters comprise for long-distance travel, while the rest are for shorter travel. Transport analysts have been demanding more bus services on the Eastern Freeway not only on the entire 13.59km stretch but also using the entry and exit points provided on the elevated corridor.
