The crime branch has arrested two brothers from Chittorgarh in Rajasthan for their alleged involvement in the theft of gold jewellery worth Rs2 crore from a shop in Goregaon (west). The cops have recovered about 5.4kg of gold ornaments worth Rs1.32 crore from the duo.

The arrested brothers have been identified as Kishan Madhulal Kharol, 20, and Nilesh Madhulal Kharol, 26. They had managed to steal the keys to the shop.

According to the police, complainant Vishal Soni, 30, is a resident of Santa Cruz and runs Mayur Jewellers at Grampanchayat Road in Goregaon. As daily routine, after the shop was closed, Soni's staffers would hand over a set of the keys to one of his trusted men from an adjacent saree shop.

On March 20, Soni left for home and after closing down the day's operations. His locked shutter and gave the keys to men from the adjacent shop.

Next morning, Soni was informed about a break-in at his shop. Soni rushed to the spot and found that about 8kgs of gold articles were missing from his shop. He also found that the CCTV footage-recording machine was missing.

While a complaint was lodged at Goregaon police station, the crime branch initiated a parallel prob.

"We received a tip-off that the accused had fled to Udaipur. When a team went to Udaipur, it learnt that prime accused Kishan was hiding in Chittorgarh. With the help of local police, we nabbed Kishan. He then spilled beans about his associate and brother Nilesh. The duo were then brought to city on Friday," said a crime branch officer.

The brothers have admitted to the crime, said the police. "Nilesh claimed that he had visited the saree shop on the night of March 20 and managed to steal the keys of Mayur Jewellers. Nilesh along with Kishan then opened the shop and decamped with the booty. We are questioning them about the remaining stolen property," the officer said.
