A 38-year-old man recently stepped into the office of crime branch claiming that he was given supari to eliminate a builder by two people. His sustained interrogation and technical intelligence revealed that he along with two others had plotted to frame two innocent people over previous enmity. Two accused have been arrested by the police.

The arrested duo has been identified as Dharavi resident Santosh Shinde alias Raghu (38), and Bandra resident Abdul Majid Hanif Shaikh (30).

According to the police, on January 15, a man walked into the Bandra Unit office of crime branch, identified himself as Santosh Shinde and revealed that he has been given a supari (contract) by two people – Salim Nanhe and Ashraf Mansuri, to kill one Naseem Macchi, believed to be a builder.

Shinde further told the police that Nanhe and Mansuri had promised to give him Rs10 lakh for the job and also gave him a pistol and four live cartridges. He also provided the mobile numbers of Nanhe and Mansuri to the police.

"Shinde told the police that he did not wanted to commit any crime and hence he appeared before the police to inform about the conspiracy and also to hand over the firearm," said a police officer.

Interestingly, mobile phone records of Shinde, Nanhe, Mansuri and one Majid were analysed. "The records revealed that Shinde, Nanhe and Mansuri never communicated with each other. On the contrary, Shinde was in constant touch with Majid, who in turn was in touch with Macchi. Shinde was then questioned for several days," the officer said.

On Wednesday, during sustained questioning, Shinde told the police that he had lied about the whole supari killing conspiracy. "Macchi had previous enmity with Nanhe and Mansuri and he along with his friend Majid decided to get the duo arrested in a serious offence. Macchi and Majid had provided numbers of Nanhe and Mansuri to Shinde and got them identified to Shinde and told him to give a bogus information to police to frame Nanhe and Mansuri," said the officer.

A case under sections 182, 120B and 34 of the Indian Penal Code has been registered against Shinde, Majid and Macchi at Bandra police station.

On the basis of information provided by Shinde, Majid was apprehended. Majid has as many as 17 criminal cases registered against him from 2000 till 2015 at Deonar, Pydhonie, Santa Cruz and Bandra police stations.

"In 2015, Majid had threatened his wife with a firearm and a case was registered with Santa Cruz police. The firearm was never seized in that offence. It now appears that the weapon produced before the crime branch was the same used by Majid to threaten his wife," said the officer.

Meanwhile, Shinde agreed to give a confessional statement before the court that Majid and Macchi had told him to provide false information to the police to frame Nanhe and Mansuri.
