A cloud seeding experiment to induce artificial rains in Nashik failed for two consecutive days after winds washed away clouds on the first day and the fuel supposedly caught moisture on the second. The administration and the International School for Professional Studies (ISPS), however, are hopeful that the experiment will work and, hence, another round is likely to take place in the next 10 days.

On Sunday, the ISPS positioned itself at the decided place in Saigaon, Nandgaon tehsil, for the experiment. However, gusty winds and the "unexpected behaviour of the clouds" drifted away hopes of many farmers who had gathered to see the rainfall.

In spite of the latest technology applied to track the movement, thickness, density, and humidity of the clouds using data from Acu-Weather, a US-based organisation, the winds proved stronger, pushing the experiment to Monday.

The same site was chosen and seven rockets fired to seed clouds with silver iodides, but in vain. The experiment was a dud on the second day as well.

"We fired seven rockets, three of which went up and the others failed to take-off. Prima facie, we think that as the fuel used is sugar, it probably caught moisture and, hence, the rockets did not take-off. Those which did go up failed to behave in the manner expected, when they hit the cloud eye," said Abdul Rehman Vanoo, trustee ISPS.

He added that ISPS has decided to return to conduct the experiment in a few days, rectifying the errors faced. "We are hopeful of succeeding; we will introspect and rectify," he said.

"We saw the hope of rainfall in the eyes of the farmers who had gathered. We could have chosen some other site for the third attempt but decided to come back here as aim is to relieve the farmers of their tension. We are confident of our technology and sure that farmers can be helped with this. The demonstration will be successful when we do it again."
