Two classmates of the Navi Mumbai college student, who killed himself by jumping in front of a train on Friday, have been booked for abetting the suicide, the police said on Sunday.

Nitin Balu Padalkar, 19, a second-year student of electronics and telecommunications, is said to have left a suicide note in which he said that he was ragged by two students.

The Government Railway Police (GRP) in Kalyan who registered a case of unnatural death named the two students as Pradeep Paikrao and Gaurav Madvi. “It seems that the two were harassing the boy because he did not help them when they asked him to show them his paper at the exams,” the police said.

The boys are students of the Ramrao Adik Institute, which is affiliated to the University of Mumbai.

Padalkar lived in Katemanivali, Kalyan (East) with his parents and a younger sister.

“Padalkar was depressed and he had told his parents about the two students who were harassing him. The students were also constantly insulting him,” said SG Nirmal, railway police inspector.

The exams began on Thursday and the following day Padalkar was at home as it was a holiday.

He left home at about 6pm, saying he was going to meet a friend. At about 9pm, the family received a call from the police informing them about the incident.

Padalkar’s body was found on the tracks, between Ulhasnagar and Vithalwadi stations. The police found a suicide note in his pocket. It was written in Marathi and read: ‘Two people, Pradeep Paikrao and Gaurav Madvi, have caused me severe mental stress. I request that they be punished severely. I am not able to live in this world. Mom and Dad don’t worry, your Nitin is with you, and provide good education to my sister.”

“We have registered a case of abetting suicide against the two students based on the suicide note and the statement by the boy’s parents,” Nirmal said. “We will question a few students who were close to Padalkar and the other two to find out the exact reason why they were harassing him.”

The anti-ragging cell of the college is helping the police in the investigations. The police inspector said. “If we find that ragging led to the suicide, we will apply the relevant sections of IPC in the case,” Nirmal said.
