Around 194 schools in Mumbai are running illegally, and as per the BMC education department data, only 100 out of those have applied for recognition. The BMC education department has requested rest of the schools to apply for recognition as well, following the recent National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) notice which slammed the state government's decision to close 1300 rural schools in the state.

One of the BMC education official said, "These schools have either come up in the year 2013 or before that. They should have first applied for recognition and then started a school. But instead they started the schools before getting a recognition from government which is illegal. We will send these schools letters requesting them to apply for recognition as soon as possible instead of shutting them down. "

According to Right to Education Act, the schools should have to follow all the norms like having separate girls and boys toilets, playground, library, compound wall for school etc on the basis of which recognition is given to them.

While some of the unauthorised schools are running from class 1st to 4th, some are running till class 7th in different parts of the city.

This reporter visited one of the unauthorised school named Infant Jesus which was built in one of the small lane in Dahisar west. However, the school authorities refused to comment about their current status.

Prashant Redij, spokesperson Mumbai Principals Association, said, "After RTE norms came in place the schools are facing lot of problem in getting recognition from the education department. If these norms are made flexible, it will be easy to regularise these schools."

MANY BEFORE 2013

  • A BMC education official said that many of these schools have either come up in 2013 or before that. The BMC will send them notices soon, he said
