Two days after a 19-year-old woman was found dead in her Nirmal Nagar residence in Bandra (E) on Thursday night. Officers of the Nirmal Nagar police station arrested the accused, who had slit her throat with a knife.

According to the police, the deceased, Nazmin Shaikh alias Reema, was pregnant and was married to 25-year-old Daleen alias Mustakin Shaikh with whom she fled from Kolkata last year and the two were staying in the Bandra house since August.

Reema's parents had lodged a missing person's complaint and also a kidnapping case against Shaikh and his parents in Kaliachak police station in West Bengal, the police said.

"During the investigation, we learnt that after Reema had conceived she started pressurising Shaikh to return to their native place but he was not ready as there was a kidnapping case against him" said Ashok Borse, a senior police inspector.

"The couple fought everyday on this issue as Shaikh refused to return home. Around three to four days ago when the issue came up again in a fit of rage, Shaikh allegedly slit her throat with a knife. As she started bleeding, Shaikh got scared and dumped her body in a water drum" said Borse.

According to the police, the incident came to light after her neighbours did not see Reema for two days as she always went to their place to watch television. Suspecting something wrong, they went to her house but found it to be locked and a foul smell was emanating from it, the police said. The neighbours immediately informed the police.

"During the search we found Reema's parents phone number and informed them about the incident" said officer.

"We launched manhunt for Shaikh, who had locked the door from outside and fled. But soon he was seen in the vicinity by the locals and they informed us. We arrested him under the charge of murder and he will be produced in the court on Sunday" said Borse.
