17% Thanekars fail RTO's online signage test

According to data available with the RTO, in 2015, 1,07,500 persons appeared for the test, of which 89,584 passed.

Despite several road awareness and safety campaigns, 17% residents have failed the test last year. The number has decreased compared to statistics of 2014. The Thane RTO conducts online tests for applicants to identify signals and road symbols.

According to data available with the RTO, in 2015, 1,07,500 persons appeared for the test, of which 89,584 passed.

In 2014, 1,13,754 persons applied, of which 18,959 failed the test while 94,795 passed.

To acquire a learner's license, the applicant has to take an online test which consists of identifying the symbols and signage. The applicant needs to score minimum marks to pass the test to get the license.

The traffic department and RTO conducts various awareness programmes throughout the year and despite that aspiring motorists are failing the tests. "Though there is not much difference in the number, it is important to understand the symbols and signage before acquiring the license. We closely monitor the tests and CCTVs are installed to keep an eye on applicants," said a senior RTO official.

Rutuja Patil, a resident of Kalwa, failed the test and was called for a retest said. "It is important that we understand the symbols and now I will study and observe the signs and will appear once again," said Patil.

While Surjeet Singh, a resident of Ghodbunder, who passed the test, said, "The online test has easy questions related to traffic. I didn't find it difficult."
