17 students of Bhandup school hospitalised after eating midday meal

The students of Shayadri Vidya Mandir at Bhandup west of class 7 and one teacher from anganwadi suffered food poisoning after eating midday meal (dal and rice) served by the school at 10am.

Parents of 17 students came to know that their children have been shifted to a hospital after they came to pick them up from school. The students of Shayadri Vidya Mandir at Bhandup west of class 7 and one teacher from anganwadi suffered food poisoning after eating midday meal (dal and rice) served by the school at 10am. All students including one teacher were rushed to the nearby M.T. Agarwal hospital for treatment.

It was a panicking situation for the parents of 16 students of class 7 on Thursday after when they like any other day came to pick up their children from school and found out that they are admitted in the hospital.

Archana Shirke, one of the parent of twin girls, said, "My both daughters are in same class. They both vomited after eating midday meal."

Another parent Vaishnavi Khapre, parent of girl student, said, "I went to school to pick my daughter like every day. I thought she is not coming down and may be in extra lecture. When I went up to check and found out that my daughter is not in school but admitted in hospital for food poisoning."

Another parent, said, "We give tiffin too to our children. Despite of that they eat midday meal looking at other children."

Dr. Usha Mophrekar, Medical Superintendent of M.T. Agarwal hospital, Mulund, said, "At 12pm on Thursday 16 students were brought. Out of them 12 were girls and four were boys. One helper teacher was also brought along with them. At 5pm one student came with abdominal pain complaint from same school and same class and she has been admitted. Two of the students were given stomach wash procedure and all were under observation."

Mahesh Palkar, education officer, BMC, said, "The midday meal was served by lingeshwar mahila bachchat gat to 700 secondary section students of Shayadri Vidya Mandir school. Out of that 16 students and one teacher from anganwadi suffered food poisoning. The midday meal was not served to afternoon section primary students then and was also discontinued for 25 schools to whom they provide service. We have seized all their material of which they made midday meal as well as water they used for cooking and sent it to lab for testing. Bhandup police is also investigating the matter."

Ramesh Khade, senior police inspector, Bhandup west police station, said, "After preliminary investigation and reports of the food sample sent for testing come we will decide on what action needs to be taken and on whom."
