Over 16,000 euros got fraudulently transferred from a 42-year-old engineer's bank account to one in Spain, following which he lodged a complaint with the MIDC police on September 17. The police claim that the victim's email was hacked, giving the accused access to his net-banking details. So far, there are indications that an international cyber-crime syndicate is involved, said the police.

According to senior police inspector Rajaram Mandage of MIDC police station, the complainant, a resident of Kalptaru estate in Andheri (E), is employed as a general manager at a petroleum firm and has a Rupee in Foreign Currency (RFC) account in a leading private bank.

"On September 13, the victim learnt that 16,753 euros, which amounts to Rs12.6 lakh, has been transferred from his account. Since, he had not made any such transaction or transfer, he got in touch with the bank and was informed that the money has been transferred to an account in La Caixa bank in Spain," Mandage said.

The police have registered a case against unknown person under section 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code and section 66C (whoever fraudulently or dishonestly makes use of electronic signature, password or any other unique identification feature of any other person) and 66D (whoever by means of any communication device or computer resource cheats by impersonation) of the Information Technology Act.

"Investigations have revealed that the accused had hacked into the victim's email and then used net banking to transfer the money. Although some amount of the transferred money was withdrawn in Spain, the Spanish bank has shown willlingness to return the amount. Since a withdrawal has taken place, it clearly indicates that an international cyber-crime syndicate is involved in the crime," said Mandage.
