16-year-old buys abortion pills, forces teen to consume it

"The girl's sister noticed that she was bleeding profusely since a week and rushed her to the hospital only to be informed that she had consumed abortion pills without proper observation from a gynaecologist," said an officer from Tilak Nagar.

Tilak Nagar police officials in Kalyan were shocked when they were informed that a 16-year-old class X failed boy easily got access to Medical Termination Pregnancy (MTP) kit and forcefully made his 17-year-old girlfriend consume it. After consuming the pills, the girl had severe blood loss and her health deteriorated. She was admitted to the hospital, leading to miscarriage.

Radhe Singh, 16 (name withheld as minor), is a resident of Kalyan. He befriended his neighbour and indulged in sexual relation at various lodges in Titwala and Piswali in Kalyan. When the girl got pregnant, the accused gave her abortion pills. She was five months pregnant and this led to deterioration of her health; she was admitted at Rukminibai hospital in Kalyan.

"The girl's sister noticed that she was bleeding profusely since a week and rushed her to the hospital only to be informed that she had consumed abortion pills without proper observation from a gynaecologist," said an officer from Tilak Nagar.

"The girl in her complaint has stated that she was forced to consume the pills to abort the baby and her boyfriend procured it from a medical store," added the officer.

"As per the complaint, we have registered the case under sections 376 (rape) and 313 (causing miscarriage) of the Indian Penal Code and under relevant sections of the Protection of Children From Sexual Offences Act," said VJ Dekhale, assistant inspector, Tilak Nagar police station.

"We will also probe as how the kid got access to abortion pills and a report would be filed. We have sent the accused to Bhiwandi home for minors," added Dekhale.

What is MTP Act?

As per MTP Act, abortions can be conducted up to 20 weeks (proposed for 24 weeks in Parliament). Between 12 and 24 weeks of pregnancy, only registered medical practitioners can conduct and guide the abortions of a foetus. MTP kit can only be prescribed by a medical practitioner. After 20 weeks of pregnancy, abortions are allowed only in 'special categories' cases
