As many as 146 members of legislative assembly (MLAs), who had pending criminal cases against them, were elected in 2009.
The number was reached at after an analysis by NGOs working for electoral reforms.
The future of these public representatives is bleak after the Centre backtracked on the controversial ordinance protecting convicted law-makers
The ordinance overrode a Supreme Court decision that disqualifies MPs and state legislators from office if they are convicted in criminal cases.
On Wednesday, the Union cabinet decided to withdraw the controversial ordinance as well as the bill protecting the convicted lawmakers.
Former state president of BJP and Ballarpur MLA Sudhir Mungatiwar has as many as 28 cases pending against him.
However, Mungatiwar enjoys a relatively clean image and is known for his elective merit.
Following Mungatiwar in the number of cases is Thane Shiv Sena MLA Eknath Shinde, who has many as 25 cases pending against him, including attempt to murder. Malegaon Outer Shiv Sena MLA Dadaji Bhuse has many as 21 cases pending against him.
Among the MLAs who have serious criminal cases pending against him, is Samajwadi Party MLA Abu Asim Azmi. The Mankhurd MLA has as many as nine criminal cases pending against him.
Samajwadi Party MLA Abu Azmi said: “All cases against me are false. But I am not sure that a lower court may not convict me.
There are so many cases where people have been falsely convicted.”
“The ruling parties can file a case against a member of the opposition party. This is not fair as public representatives have a chance to appeal in higher courts if they are innocent,” he added.
Former tribal development minister Babanrao Pachpute, industries minister Narayan Rane and PWD minister Jaidutt Shirsagar are the senior politicians of the state who have serious cases against them.
NCP working president Jitendra Awhad has serious criminal cases pending against him. MNS MLAs Ram Kadam and Bala Nandgaonkar face serious charges. Kadam is charged with voluntarily causing hurt with dangerous weapons. Recently, Kadam and Nalasopara MLA Kshitij Thakur were arrested for assaulting an inspector on the premises of the legislature.
An NCP MLA from Jalgaon Dilip Wagh was charged for raping a girl.
Mira-Bhayander MLA Gilbert Mendonca has many as 19 cases pending against him including an attempt to murder.
MPs not far behind
The Members of Parliament are no better. As many as 26 MPs out of the 48 from the state have criminal cases against them, of them as many as nine MPs have serious charges against them.
Hansraj Ahir, BJP MP from Chandrapur, has several cases pending against him. NCP from Osamanabad Padamsinh Patil (in pic) has charges of murder against him. He is an accused in the murder of his own cousin Pawanraje Nimbalkar.
Satara NCP MP Udayanraje Bhosale was an accused in the murder of a former corporator Sharad Appa Levhe in Satara.
Bhosale was acquitted later.
