Encouraged by two successful heart transplant in the city recently, a 14-year-old Nashik resident has registered himself with the Fortis Hospital in Mulund for the procedure.

Nakul Patil, a Class IX student, was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy four months ago. According to doctors, his heart's pumping efficiency has dropped from 60 per cent to 10-15 per cent, leading to swellings in several parts of his body. The dna has been reporting about the family's struggle for funds for his treatment.

Cardiothoracic surgeon Dr Anvay Mulay said, "He has been registered and will be given priority. In paediatric cases, we require a donor heart that matches the size of the recipient's heart." Doctors said Patil's heart has become so weak and enlarged, that supply of blood to lungs, liver and other vital organs has been affected. With no medication or other surgery working for him, Patil has been advised to consider a heart transplant.

Dr Mulay said, "The boy's heart is small since birth, and he weighs only 30kg. We require a heart from a donor whose weight is around 40 kg."

While speaking to dna, Patil's father Dilip said he will be admitted to the hospital on August 14. "We are praying that he too gets a donor. He has been in and out of hospitals for a while now. We have managed to collect Rs4 lakh so far. We need another Rs5-6 lakh for the operation," said Dilip, who works in the administrative department of a Nashik nursing home.

The hospital has two more heart patients lined up for a transplant. "The other two do not require a transplant right away. They are attending our heart failure clinic and we are monitoring their progress," said Dr Mulay.

Meanwhile, the 20-year-old patient who underwent a transplant on August 3 was shifted to ward on Monday. "He is talking, cracking jokes and doing well. The second patient who underwent the procedure on August 7 is still in the ICU, but his ventilator was removed on Wednesday. He is breathing on his own and will be mobilised out of the ICU in the next two-three days," added Dr Mulay.

So far...
In 2015, 25 cadavers were donated in Mumbai, which resulted in 44 kidney transplant, 22 liver transplant and 2 heart transplant
Six hospitals from the city had acquired the permission 10 years ago to perform heart transplant but not a single such procedure was performed in the state. Finally after a 47-year gap, two procedures were conducted in Fortis hospital.

The TRANSPLANT
A heart transplant or a cardiac transplantation is a surgical procedure performed on patients with end-stage heart failure or severe coronary artery disease, and is only considered when neither medication nor other surgeries can ensure the patient's survival.
Patient's own heart is either removed (orthotopic procedure) or, less commonly, left in place to support the donor heart (heterotopic procedure). The heart is donated by family of those who has been declared brain dead.
