The Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University (YCMOU) will award academic degrees to 1, 32, 327 students during its 21st convocation ceremony on January 30 at its Nashik campus. Chancellor of universities, Governor C V Rao and eminent scientist Vijay Bhatkar will preside over the ceremony.

Speaking about the convocation ceremony and the achievements of the YCMOU, vice chancellor Manikrao Salunkhe said that while 20 students will be awarded their PhD degrees during the convocation, 23, 912 students from Nanded Regional Centre will be awarded degrees in various disciplines, and 81, 598 students will receive degrees including graduate, post graduate or MPhil degrees in the Arts faculty. The university has about 6.75 lakh students studying in its 10 regional centres across the state.

Speaking about the varisty's plans to bridge the gap between industry and academics, Salunkhe said that the university aims at meeting the needs of both the industries and students. He said that they had plans to start a community college in Pune on an experimental basis to create more jobs for the youth by linking with various industries. "Such a community college will enable students to bridge the gap as industries would provide the working environment to the students and the university would back the theoretical aspects for the courses." Such efforts have already been made with the Nashik engineering cluster," he added.

During his stay and visit to the YCMOU for the convocation ceremony, the governor would be introduced to agriculture education and research capacities of the varsity. He would be shown various agricultural farm products. "Five products have been produced and will be commercialized eventually. A proposal in this regard has already been sent to the state government, for which the approval is expected soon," Salunkhe added.
