To cater to the traffic management issues of Mumbai, the traffic police department initiated a volunteering programme inviting citizens to join hands with them. 1,200 volunteers, over the past one week have signed up for this programme.

At an interactive programme organized by the Indian Merchant Chambers (IMC), the commissioner of police, Datta Padsalgikar, revealed, "There are 430 vehicles on per kilometer road stretch, and around 3,500 policemen to cater to them. Hence, this initiative was undertaken and the results are very pleasing."

Speaking about this initiative, Milind Bharambe, joint commissioner of police (Traffic), said, "The traffic volunteering and patrolling scheme was organized about 10 days ago. It is very evident that Mumbai has an increasing traffic issue and people have been complaining about this, but this will help them step into our shoes and understand our plight."

"This initiative will give the volunteers a sense of participation and a sense of belongingness. The initiative will also spread awareness, because when drivers will see a common man participating in an activity like this, it will have a good impact on them as well," added Bharambe.

Explaining about the role of the volunteers, Bharambe said, "The volunteer would be expected to derive a couple of hours in a week to do the patrolling at the nearest junction. The volunteer would have to only regulate and guide the vehicles. S/he, however, would not be allowed to charge fine."

According to Bharambe, "A lot of Advance Locality Managements are coming forward, and we are making an appeal to other resident communities to also come forward and support us in this initiative." Every volunteer will be presented with a certificate as a token of appreciation from the traffic police department.

For those willing to join the programme, one can approach their nearest traffic police zone and fill a traffic volunteering and patrolling scheme form, after which, the participant will be selected.

Speaking about the solution to the traffic problems, Padsalgikar said, "If each one starts looking after the way they drive their vehicle, a large chunk of the issue will be catered on its own."
