A 9-year-old girl was saved from drowning when an alert 12-year-old boy spotted her struggling in Banganga pond at Walkeshwar on Saturday afternoon. He has been felicitated for his bravery.

Without thinking twice about his own safety, Mohit Dalvi (12), who knows how to swim, demonstrated great valiance in Saturday afternoon's near-accident.

According to the police, Krishna Paste (9), a resident of Diva, had gone to her maternal uncle's residence for her summer break. Her uncle, who will be getting married next month, stays in Walkeshwar area.

Owing to the hot weather, a lot children go swimming in Banganga pond at Walkeshwar. Paste too, visited the pond for a swim on Saturday afternoon.

An officer with Malabar Hill police said: "Without realising the depth of the water, Paste kept walking further away from land. Her legs also got stuck deep inside the mud, and she slowly started to drown. When she began shouting for help, one of the boys present at the spot (Dalvi), wasted no time in jumping into the water, and rescued Paste."

By then, a large gathering of people crowded the area, and the police was informed. The cops soon reached the spot and Paste was rushed to a nearby private hospital.

The officer added: "It is indeed an act of bravery on Dalvi's part. His timely effort saved the life of a little girl."

The police are also taking great efforts to ensure that Dalvi gets a medal of bravery, and have also assured that the police department will take care of Paste's medical expenses.

The Malabar Hill police have felicitated Dalvi for his bravery act.
